Eliciting thematic reanalysis effects: The role of syntax-independent information during parsing

چکیده
In this paper, we present experimental evidence for the existence of syntax-independent (viz. thematic) reanalysis effects. In an experiment using event-related brain potentials (ERPs), we manipulated the thematic structure of the verb in transitive, unambiguously case marked German verb-final clauses such that the processing of this verb either confirmed the ‘canonical’ hierarchical thematic ordering between the sentential arguments (active verbs) or required a reversal of this ordering (object-experiencer verbs). The latter elicited a parietal positivity between 300 and 600 ms post onset, which, as we argue, must be interpreted as reflecting a thematic reanalysis. The second experimental manipulation, i.e., a variation of word order (SO vs. OS), revealed an early positivity at the position of the second Job No. 9601 Mendip Communications Ltd Page: 269 of 298 Date: 8/5/03 Time: 11:07am Job ID: LANGUAGE 006899

An EEG–MEG Dissociation between Online Syntactic Comprehension and Post Hoc Reanalysis
Successful comprehension of syntactically complex sentences depends on online language comprehension mechanisms as well as reanalysis in working memory. To differentiate the neural substrates of these processes, we recorded electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (MEG) during sentence-picture-matching in healthy subjects, assessing the effects of two difficulty factors: syntactic comp...
متن کاملThe Failure to Use Gender Information in Parsing: A Comment on van Berkum, Brown, and Hagoort (1999)
We critically review the empirical evidence published by van Berkum, Brown, and Hagoort (1999a, b) against syntax-first models of sentence parsing. According to van Berkum et al., discourse factors and word gender information are used instantaneously to guide the parser. First, we note that the density of the experimental trials (relative to fillers) and the slow presentation rate of the van Be...
متن کاملParsing Verb-Final Clauses in German: Garden-path and ERP Effects Modeled by a Parallel Dynamic Parser
Experimental sentence comprehension studies have shown that superficially similar German clauses with verb-final word order elicit very different garden-path and ERP effects. We show that a computer implementation of the Unification Space parser (Vosse & Kempen, 2000) in the form of a localist-connectionist network can model the observed differences, at least qualitatively. The model embodies a...
متن کاملبررسی مقایسهای تأثیر برچسبزنی مقولات دستوری بر تجزیه در پردازش خودکار زبان فارسی
In this paper, the role of Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging for parsing in automatic processing of the Persian language is studied. To this end, the impact of the quality of POS tagging as well as the impact of the quantity of information available in the POS tags on parsing are studied. To reach the goals, three parsing scenarios are proposed and compared. In the first scenario, the parser assigns...
متن کاملIdentifying the role of phonology in sentence-level reading.
Phonological properties of the words in a sentence have been shown to affect processing fluency and comprehension. However, the exact role of phonology in sentence comprehension remains unclear. If constituents are stored in working memory during routine processing and accessed through their phonological code, phonological information may exert a pervasive influence on post-lexical comprehensio...
